Eagle-eyed tennis fans made light of Serbian pro Victor Troicki's arms after realising that one was visibly larger than the other following his round one victory in the Australian Open.

But if you look at most tennis players - including greats like Rod Laver, Rafael Nadal and even Serena Williams - it won't take you long to realise that their dominant, playing arm is much more built up than the other.

After smashing away at thousands of tennis balls Australian great Rod Laver's left forearm was far more developed than his right, with punters commenting that it had swollen to 'Popeye-like-proportions'.

According to The New York Times, his left forearm was around four and a half centimetres larger than his right, while his left wrist was two and a half centimetres thicker than its mate.

Rafael Nadal, currently ranked world number five, has also been called out for his disproportionate arm size, with some even commenting that lopsided Troicki had contracted 'Nadal disease'.

When questioned by Men's Fitness about his bulging left limb, the 29-year-old Spaniard agreed one is more defined than the other but said he didn't work out to achieve that look and blamed the hype on his sleeveless shirt.

'My left arm is much more developed than my right arm. This is because I play lefty and that's sort of my gym, the tennis court,' he said.

The disparity knows no gender with photographs of tennis icon Serena Williams also showing the 34-year-old sporting a much bulkier right arm.

The women's world number one is known for her athletic physique but her serving arm could blow most men out of the water.

Females with much larger playing arms are also represented by Russian Maria Sharapova.

Unlike Nadal and Laver, the current women's world number five takes after Williams and Troicki with a far more defined right arm than left.

On Tuesday Australian Open spectators were left wondering if Vicktor Troicki’s workouts were a little uneven after an amazing photo captured the huge difference in size between his incredibly built right arm and his small, wirey left limb.

Three days after claiming victory in an epic final at the Apia International in Sydney, the world number 22 triumphed over Daniel Munoz de la Nava in five sets to proceed to round two of the Australian Open.

However, fans were distracted by how much bigger his right, playing arm is, remarking: ‘I mean all tennis players’ dominant arms are bigger but this is the most drastic difference I’ve seen on a player.’

Whatever Troicki is doing, there’s no denying it is working for his game after he retained the Apia International in Sydney on Saturday when he victory over Grigor Dimitrov in a fierce four set, two hour and 16 minute battle.

The win is the 29-year-old’s third career title.

The win came after Dimitrov criticised officials for not scheduling the defending champ to play on centre court for the majority of the tournament, rather relegating the Serb to play on other courts which he claimed were next to a noisy marquee.
