After graduating from college, Jimmy Johnson started his career as an assistant coach for Louisiana Tech University in the year 1965. Likewise, he helped Terry Bradshaw to start quarterback in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Later he became an assistant coach at Picayune Memorial High School, then at Wichita State University. Following this in the years 1968 and 1969, he worked under former American football player Johnny Mayor at Iowa State University.

Similarly, he became the defensive line coach under head coach Chuck Fairbanks at the University of Oklahoma.
