A bicyclist is reportedly battling for his life after being struck by a car on Highway 84 East on Tuesday afternoon. James Fugate, 47, was transported by EMServ Ambulance to South Central Regional Medical Center and transferred to another hospital with what were described as serious injuries. He was eastbound on the highway, near Keahey Gore Road, when he was struck by a Honda Crosstour just after 4 p.m. Volunteers from Powers and M&M responded to assist with traffic control and to render aid, as did off-duty EMServ medic Justin Bumgardner. Fugate had just been released from the Jones County Adult Detention Center hours earlier after being arrested by Laurel police and charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, failure to comply and public drunkenness. He is often seen on his bicycle riding along Highway 84 East. Jones County Sheriff’s Department personnel also responded along with a Mississippi Highway Patrol trooper. MHP is investigating the incident. (Photo by Mark Thornton)
